Mexico – Punta Allen Fishing Club

Located some 3 hours south of Cancun, Ascension and Espiritu Santo bays form a unique environment and an ideal habitat for animals and plants, on land and under water. Four of those animal species are prime game fish: bonefish, permit, tarpon and snook. In 2009, a small game fishing operation has opened its doors right in the middle of this paradise and is catering to anglers at very mellow rates. Fishing season starts in November and ends in late May.
During the first three months of the season, wading and skiff fishing for bonefish and permit is excellent, on occasion will you be able to find snook and baby tarpon. By February, your chances for a Grand Slam will increase as bonefish will be everywhere, permit and baby tarpon should be numerous with snook, barracuda and jacks completing the species list.
Ascension Bay is a permit hunter’s bonanza. Their numbers are staggering as you can find them in singles or in small groups tailing on shallow flats or in schools moving along. You will get quite a few shots with decent casting conditions, increasing your chances to catch a permit on fly a lot.
Ever since the lodge has opened its doors, virtually every angler we had the privilege of introducing to this destination has managed to catch a permit, with some fortunate ones catching up to 7 permit in a single week.
Located in a natural preserve, the lodge is one of a handful of eco-friendly operations (lodges, hotels…) in the area that respect environmentally friendly standards.
Run by a couple of very nice and passionate Franco-Italian fly anglers, the lodge staff will carefully listen to the needs of their European guests.
A typical day will start at about 7.30 AM and usually ends around 5 or 5.30 PM. The 23-foot panga boats will have 2 guides on board to maximize fishing time for the 2 anglers sharing the boat.
Non-angling companion are most welcome, there are numerous activities available: visiting the Maya ruins at Tulum, Chichen Itza, Ek balam, Coba, visiting the typical villages of the region, bathing and snorkeling in the freshwater lagoons, diving, wildlife watching (dolphin, turtles, pelicans, toucan, birds, etc…)
Upon request and in partnership with Planet Fly Fishing, I will organize tailor-made trips (6 days fishing minimum) to Punta Allen and will assist the customers as a “tour leader” for groups of up to 4 anglers.
From the departure in Europe, I will assist the group in matters of transfers, translation, and matters of technical advice, in collaboration with the local guides and Pascale, the lodge manager. All my accumulated knowledge of flats fishing for a host of species will be at your disposal. I will help you prepare your trip; make tackle choices, flies, etc…
